On Design

Design is not everything, but it is the only thing that makes a difference. Whether we are talking about brands, products, experiences, or systems, design is key. The perception of good design is never universal. Taste in design is determined by culture, shaped by history, geography, tradition, and collective values. What one society perceives as elegant simplicity may be interpreted elsewhere as coldness or emptiness. Design therefore cannot exist in isolation from the cultural context in which it is created. Successful designers are those who understand not only form and function, but also the psychology and social meaning behind objects and experiences. Design has evolved from problem-solving to sense-making.
